Woo! I got my ass kicked today. I also learned something. People in Vail run fast! I definitely didn’t feel 100% this morning but I think my 100% would be these people’s 20%. Anyways, I did well for me! My pace is about average for that long of a run for me. So I am glad I went out and did it and if anything it made me realize how I need to train on hills and do some speed work before my half marathon in November. And hey I didn’t come in last 🙂
The course was awesome and it was a beautiful day for a race. It was nice knowing the course from my previous hike. I knew where I could run and where I had to walk. Basically anything uphill killed me after the big hill. At the start I was behind a group going slow on the tight single track and that messed me up a bit. Although running faster might have hurt me more later anyways. The last mile through the trees on the Vail Trail were killer. But I held steady and kept running all the way to the finish. I placed 8/14 in my age group with a total time of 1:26:31. It was a good lead into my serious training for my half marathon which starts after I get a rest day tomorrow!
Overall I enjoyed the race, and was glad to get a taste of a hill climb, so I know now what I should practice, that and speed work. The first and last 2 miles were really awesome ups and downs on singletrack through the woods, I probably would have done a lot better if that was the whole course! The hill climb although brutal, was beautiful and I pushed it as hard as I could. Would I do it again? … Of course! I’m already looking forward to my next race!
