Hope Pass – Trail Running Update

hopepassToday I ran Hope Pass with my friend Amy. We kept talking about running in Leadville but with conflicting schedules we were finding it hard to make it happen. Finally we found a day we both had off of work and planned to run somewhere on the Leadville 100 course. We decided on Hope Pass and Amy’s friend’s were camping at Twin Lakes already, so we headed down after work and camped with them.

We got up early and made breakfast, the weather was very clear so no worries about storms and we started running around 8:45am from the Willis Gulch trailhead off of Independence Pass just outside of Twin Lakes. There were a couple of short flat sections that we ran but for the most part we fast hiked uphill. We reached the top of the pass a little after 10am and stopped to eat and take in the views. It was so beautiful up there.

We saw a few people who looked like they were probably training for the Leadville 100 which takes place in a few weeks. I volunteered at the Silver Rush 50 a couple weeks ago for 10 hours and now am able to put my name in the lottery with a good chance of getting selected to run in the 100. I’m not sure if I could run 100 miles by the end of next summer, but I might put my name in and if I get picked, just go out and run as far as I can. I would love to at least say I attempted the Leadville 100, even if I only made it up and down Hope Pass once and dropped at 50.

Squamish is only a few weeks away and Matt and I are so excited to start our road trip to BC. We are planning to spend a couple days in Jackson, WY and a couple in Glacier NP, before spending 5 days in Squamish. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. I haven’t been training as hard as I probably should be, but I feel good when I go out and run, so I’m just counting on that for the race I guess. I’m just hoping it’s not too hot and humid, although it probably will be.

Amy and I headed down after a few minutes taking in the view at the top and were back at the trailhead in about an hour. It was a great run, with beautiful weather and a good friend! Can’t wait to get back out there next week on my days off. Setting my sights on a 14er most likely!
