Now that we’re on the other side of the winter solstice, I’m already thinking about longer days and springtime adventures. Yes, I know it’s only January right now and we still have a long way to go. But in about a month or so Moab will start getting warmer, and that is something every Coloradoan who lives in the mountains is dreaming about.
I am not much of a mountain biker, and Moab is known for its world class mountain biking. When I do go mountain biking it’s usually in Moab. But there are also a ton of other fun things to do there. Not to mention Moab is within driving distance from 4 or 5 large cities in 5 different states.
Did you know that all of those same awesome mountain biking trails are also really fun running trails? Moab also boasts many trail run events throughout the year including the Thelma and Louise all womens run, Moab Trail Marathon, The other half, etc. There are so many to choose from. There is a newer area in Moab called the Magnificent 7 trails and Matt and I have run their several times. It’s a super fun place to be before the snow dries out in the mountains if you’re training for an event.
There are two national parks in Moab, Arches and Canyonlands. Both are stunningly beautiful and classic Utah adventures. At Arches the must do hike is to the delicate arch, it’s a relatively short hike but the views of the arch are incredible. At Canyonlands the Grand View Point hike is definitely worth it. Canyonlands is also a great place to see the stars at night as it is an internationally recognized Dark Sky Park.
The Green River and the Colorado River both run through the Moab area. You can raft, kayak, SUP, jetboat, swim, etc. The opportunities are endless. Either bring your own equipment or there are many companies in Moab that will rent equipment or take you on guided trips or tours.
For all of you motorheads out there, Moab is once of the best places for off roading. There are so many trails and you can bring your own or rent dirtbikes, jeeps, buggys, or ATVs in town. Although I never myself have been much of a motorhead, I have hiked up some of the off roading trails and watched the trucks and jeeps do their thing and it looks like a lot of fun!
Moab is a mecca of rock climbing. If you are new to climbing there are well known areas like Wall Street on Potash road where you can get a guide to take you on your first time with all the gear. If you are an avid climber there are classic places like the Fisher Towers or Indian Creek. There is something for everyone to climb in Moab.
And there is tons of mountain biking for sure, but you probably already know that 🙂
And if you don’t, check out the article I wrote on biking the Sovereign Trail.
This is just a short list of activities in Moab, there is a plethora of things to do. So as your planning your spring trip to Moab maybe try something new, go on an adventure somewhere you’ve never been before. Get up early and beat the crowds, watch the sunrise or sun set.
