This week I went to an aerial yoga class at my local gym. I like yoga, I mostly just do it in my living room at home. I’m not very flexible and I’ve never tried Aerial Yoga before this. But it sounded interesting so I gave it a shot. It was really fun! I enjoyed the challenge of the poses and it gave me a new perspective on yoga.
Trying something new is really good for your motivation. You learn that trying something new isn’t as scary as you think it is. Are you someone who goes to a restaurant and orders the same thing every single time? Or do you like to try a new menu item every so often? Are you a creature of habit or do you purposefully try new things? If you find yourself in the latter category I want to tell you why you should step out of your comfort zone and try something new every once in awhile.
1. Learn something new
In order to consistently better yourself and achieve success in whatever you are try to accomplish, chances are you will need to learn new skills along the way. Trying something new exercises the part of your brain that helps you learn. It makes you more comfortable outside of your comfort zone.
Trying something new might lead you to a new group of people through the thing itself like the aerial yoga class where I met a couple of other yogis and we chatted about the class and what we liked about it. This can be a great opportunity to meet new people to share ideas with. Who knows maybe you’ll even make a new friend or a new client.
3. It is Refreshing
Doing something a little different then your “norm” is refreshing. It gives you a new perspective on your life and your normal routine. It might even change your routine and change is good! It’s like taking a deep breath but instead of filling your lungs you’ll fill your head with new ideas.
4. You’ll Feel Accomplished
After awhile your normal routine becomes, well, routine. It doesn’t always feel like you’ve achieved anything because it’s the same thing you’ve been doing all along. When you try something new you feel like you accomplished something, similar to the way you feel when you crush a goal. It’s not always easy to step out of your comfort zone so when you do it successfully it feels good.
5. It’s Fun!
Stepping out of the comfort zone and exploring a new adventure is fun. Even if you totally suck at it you should still enjoy trying to learn. At aerial yoga there were some interesting moves hanging upside down that were a little scary but still super fun to try. I’m sure I looked really silly trying to figure the moves out but I had a great time trying.
